Biography
The son of a builder, George Cuit was an English painter, born at Moulton, near Richmond in the North Riding of Yorkshire. He displayed a great taste for drawing in his youth and studied in Rome for six years under the patronage of the ‘Nabob of the North’ Lawrence Dundas. On his return, Cuit settled in Richmond where he occupied himself with painting landscapes for local members of the gentry, or “planting trees on canvas” as he called his work in a letter to a close friend, Reverend James Tate. Cuit painted theatrical scenery for the Samuel Butler company’s opening night of the Richmond Theatre in September 1788.
